Introduction:
Took the TOEFL exam on 26th October and faced unexpected technical issues.
Sharing my experience to help others prepare for potential challenges during the test.
Preparation and Mock Tests:
Consistently scored 110–114 in mock tests, with minor errors in the Writing section.
Felt confident about achieving a high score, especially in Reading and Listening.
Test Day Experience:
Test Center Choice:
Opted for a test center in India due to negative reviews about the at-home experience.
Chose a local center, which later proved to be problematic.
Technical Issues:
Proctor informed me of a wiring issue with the computers and advised against moving too much.
Midway through the Reading section, the screen went blank.
Proctor assured me the test would resume from where it left off, which it did.
Unexpected Results:
Received a Reading score of 16, which was shockingly low compared to my mock test performances.
Felt deeply affected, questioning my preparation and fluency in English (despite being fluent since childhood).
Resolution and Next Steps:
Emailed TOEFL support but received no immediate response.
On 28th October, received an email stating my test was canceled due to technical issues.
Offered a free makeup test, confirming the issue was on their end.
Frustrated by the wasted time and emotional toll, especially while juggling Master’s applications and portfolio preparation.
Key Takeaways:
Choose Your Test Center Wisely:
Research test centers thoroughly. If possible, travel to a more reliable location.
Be Prepared for Technical Issues:
Stay calm and alert the proctor immediately if any issues arise.
Advocate for Yourself:
If you suspect a technical issue affected your performance, contact TOEFL support promptly.
Mental Preparedness:
Understand that technical glitches can happen, and it’s not a reflection of your abilities.
Conclusion:
While the experience was exhausting, it highlighted the importance of choosing the right test center and being mentally prepared for unexpected challenges.
Hoping for a smoother experience during the makeup test.
Good luck to all TOEFL test-takers!
